It was discovered when a school bus drove over it, causing one of its rear tyres to get stuck around 8am on Wednesday (Oct 16).

It was reported that the sinkhole may have been caused by a burst Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) pipe, as a bad odour was detected.

Pantai Jerejak assemblyman Fahmi Zainol, who visited the site, expressed his shock at the road's subsidence.

"I was informed that a burst underground IWK pipe may have caused water to flow beneath the road," he said, adding that a bad odour was detected.

Fahmi noted that this was the first incident of its kind.

He mentioned that if IWK is responsible, they would engage contractors to repair it.

"They will review CCTV footage in the area to determine the cause and proceed from there. It appears the soil has eroded and the surrounding area is unstable. Barriers have been set up and that section has been cordoned off from traffic until repairs are completed," he added.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — The ongoing US-China trade war has complicated Malaysia's ambition to exploit its rare earth reserves worth around US$50 billion (RM214 billion), according to Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Since 2018, the US and its allies have imposed sanctions and tariffs on China to limit its growing economic influence, impacting global supply chains for critical materials.

Despite these efforts, Western economies remain heavily reliant on China for rare earth supplies, with China producing 240,000 metric tonnes in 2023, far exceeding the US's output.

Malaysia’s natural resources and environmental sustainability minister told the South China Morning Post that the trade war meant his country could find it difficult to move the rare-earths if the hostilities expands to affect partner nations.

“In processing, mining, a lot of technology is held by China. In many aspects they are the most competitive,” Nik Nazmi was quoted as saying.

“Certain countries have limitations ... if you use Chinese technology to mine, then maybe there will be limitations [on trade].”

China is Malaysia’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade amounting to RM400 billion annually; the US is third, with nearly half the trad value.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed the intention to capture a larger share of the global rare earths market following the discovery of potential reserves within Malaysia.

The Malaysian government estimates that the country has up to 16.2 million tonnes of untapped rare earths located in states like Perak, Pahang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu.

These rare earths, including neodymium and samarium, are essential for green technologies, such as super magnets used in electric vehicles and wind turbines.

Local officials are determined to control the entire process of mining, processing, and exporting these minerals, despite the geopolitical hurdles.

Nik Nazmi said Malaysia was hedging its bets in the sector by engaging not only the China, US, and Australia to explore its rare-earths industry, but Japan and South Korea as well.

BALING: Work together and act swiftly in addressing landslides in Teloi Forest Reserve.

This is the message from Dewan Rakyat Senator Abd Nasir Idris to relevant authorities following the debris surge and flood that ravaged Kampung Teluk Rambong in Tanjung Pari here.

Nasir, who is also a former Bayu assemblyman said quick action to stabilise the collapsed slopes is imperative as there is a risk for a similar incident on Sept 30 to recur, due to current heavy rainfall in the area.

"The possibility for the incident to recur in this area is high. Thankfully, the recent incident did not involve casualties.

"However, if we fail to carry out studies and learn lessons from what happened here, we are worried that the thing that we fear the most (involving casualties) will happen. That is our concern," he said after visiting a house belonging to villager Mohd Naim Asri Baharom, 46, that was destroyed by the surging floods.

To mitigate the risks, Nasir called on the relevant authorities to get their act together and move swiftly, before another major disaster hit the village.

"Hence, I wish to call on the relevant government agencies involved in managing flood disasters, including the Drainage and Irrigation Department and the state Forestry Department to sit together and discuss," he said.

It was reported that Kampung Teluk Rambong was hit by the first debris surge and flood on Sept 30, destroying three bridges and forcing several families to be evacuated to a nearby temporary flood relief centre.

in Teloi Forest Reserve located above Bukit Lata Putih following the worst flood in the village's history.

Kampung Teluk Rambong is located in the foothills of Bukit Lata Putih, and the water surge is believed to have originated from the hill.

The villagers claimed that logging used to be carried out in the Teloi Forest Reserve, which is located in neighbouring Sik district, some 15 years ago.

that there was logging in Bukit Lata Putih.

Its director, Muhamad Abdullah, said the land was privately owned and not part of the Ulu Muda Forest Reserve.
