KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the state will not prioritize rare earth element (REE) mining, despite its inclusion among the top 10 states with significant REE potential. Citing environmental concerns, the Premier emphasized that such activities contradict Sarawak’s green economy agenda.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Premier Abang Johari expressed the need for careful consideration before proceeding with REE mining due to its potential environmental impact. He stressed the importance of focusing on alternative economic activities that align with the state’s sustainable development goals. These remarks were made during a press briefing following the groundbreaking ceremony of the Che Hia Khor Kidney Foundation Moral Uplifting Society’s medical and commercial building project.

The Department of Minerals and Geosciences Malaysia (JMG) has identified 10 states, including Sarawak, with potential for REE extraction. The estimated value of these resources across the states is approximately RM809.6 billion. However, Premier Abang Johari’s stance suggests a cautious approach, prioritizing environmental preservation over immediate economic gain from REE mining.
