KUCHING: The state government has raised concerns about the need to pursue industries like rare earth element (REE) mining, which could harm the environment, when Sarawak has more environmentally friendly industries.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg said the state government would not rush into implementing REE mining activities.

Although studies on REE have been conducted, he said, the state government has no plans to mine the mineral as it would cause environmental damage.

"This mining (REE) requires thorough research because it can affect the environment. So, for me, if we have other options, why should we carry out an industry that could harm the environment when we have other industries that are cleaner and more environmentally friendly?" he said.

He said this after attending the groundbreaking ceremony of the Chia Hia Khor Moral Uplifting Society Sarawak (CHKMUS) today.

Also present were the Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi; Deputy Premier, Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian; and Sarawak Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

He said this in response to a report from the Department of Mineral and Geoscience (JMG), which listed Sarawak among the top 10 states identified as having potential REE deposits, with an estimated value of RM809.6 billion.

Abang Johari said Sarawak would reconsider REE mining only if there were no other options or if circumstances became urgent.

"Unless it's absolutely necessary (we may consider it), but right now we are not desperate because we have other industries to generate income... so for now, we will put REE on hold," he said.
