Mineral research, development, and commercial (R&D&C) activities seek to increase the use of local mineral resources, value added, and product diversification income. This result can reduce dependence on imported minerals. The R&D results are also capable of spurring Malaysia to become a well-known producer and supplier of mineral-based products. JMG is strengthening efforts to make the Mineral Research Centre (PPM) the country's mineral R&D and C centre of excellence.
The Mineral Investigation Centre (PPM) is the research and development (R&D) division of the Department of Minerals and Geosciences (JMG) in Malaysia. PPM carries out R&D projects related to technology based on clay, silica, rock, and the most advanced materials. In order to promote the sustainable exploitation of mineral resources, R&D related to mineral processing technology, mining, quarrying, and the recovery of stopes and quarries is also carried out. The main focus of research and development (R&D) at PPM is to add value to commodity products based on local mineral sources.
In line with the evolution of the country's development today to commercialise the results of local investigations to generate state revenue, PPM not only has a role in carrying out R&D but has even taken steps to the innovation and commercialization stage. Several PPM investigation projects have been registered as intellectual property with the Malaysian Intellectual Property Agency (MyIPO). Besides that, PPM also participates in various innovation competitions such as MTE/ InSIDE/ VIC/ AIINEX and others aimed at promoting innovation results and assessing the impact of the effectiveness of the investigations that have been carried out. PPM also provides MS ISO 9001:2015 services, which cover two scopes, namely the Dimensional Stone Test and the Mineral Processing Test (Tin Ore/Iron Ore/Gold Ore/Silica Sand). Apart from that, PPM also carries out technical cooperation and smart partnerships in the field of mineral investigations with industry, agencies, and IPT.
